http://webcams.at/ has the normal geographical set of cams, including one of Paris and
the Eiffel Tower. There are two views actually, and you can see what&Mac226;s going on
at the base of the tower as well. My favourite here is the animal section. The
Minnesota Zoo had a group of Tiger cubs born last year and the website has been
keeping a close eye on them here.
At http://www.cammunity.com/ they organise their cameras
a little differently, with topics like people, destinations, nature,
interactive and so on.
The interactive section shows cameras you can control yourself, like this one
at http://www.earthcam.com which is a good traditional list of webcams, with a
particularly good metro section is though in spite of being called Earthcam
there's a definite USA bias to this one.
http://Camcentral.com/ is the most reliable of these sites - every single one of the
cams I tried actually worked. It was through this site that I found
http://Icepick.com/. This is a house in the Netherlands where they've wired up the
doorbell, fridge, microwave, toilet and the phone to the internet. Even the
cats are tracked in this house and each time they have a meal the computer
takes a picture of them! But I also found my favourite, the University of Ulms
interactive train cam!
So with all those hundreds of thousands of pictures to choose from and almost
all of them made by people like you, do you begin to get the feeling that maybe
a webcam could actually be pretty easy to set up? Well it is, all you need is a
cheap electronic camera, a computer, an internet connection and some pages
which show you how to plug it all in.
As well as being a directory of websites,
http://www.topdogcams.com/ have a tutorial section,
rather hidden away though in very small letters on the left hand side. It'll
tell you how to set up your webcam page on the internet - and this doesn't mean
you actually need to know anything about HTML, because you can download all the
code you need directly from this site. This page promises some detail of other
technologies that are coming soon, let's hope one of them is a spell checker.
It also shows you how to set up the software, (that's the program that takes
the pictures and sends them to the internet) and how to set up the hardware
(that's just the camera).
Another site to look at is http://developers.webcamworld.com/ .
They have guided tutorial similar to topdog, but it's longer and goes
into much greater detail and they make some
recommendations for the kind of camera you should buy...

+++ Zugangsgeschwindigkeiten bundesweit abfragen
Ab sofort kann jeder Internetnutzer kostenlos auf einer
Deutschlandkarte die Analog-, ISDN- und
DSL-Zugangsgeschwindigkeiten der verschiedenen
Internetanbieter in verschiedenen deutschen Staedten
einsehen. Wie der Telekommunikations-Infodienst Verivox
am Dienstag mitteilte, schneiden nach ersten Messungen
die kleineren Anbieter am Besten ab. Schlechte Noten
gab es z.B. fuer die grossen Provider in Koeln: Bei
Nutzung eines Analog-Modems lag die Leistung von
T-Online, Addcom oder auch Talkline bei unter 60
Prozent. Den schlechtesten Wert hatte hier AOL mit nur
2,8 Kilobit pro Sekunde. Normal fuer ein Analog-Modem
waeren aber etwa 5,9 Kilobit Uebertragungsgeschwindigkeit
pro Sekunde...
